New Workplace Mediation Video
This new mediation video is one of the better ones I've seen on the mediation process. Produced by the British-based TCM Group, it depicts an internal workplace mediation between two senior members of a team. The video boasts excellent production values, realistic acting and an authentic view of a mediation session led by a professional mediator. Total run time is just under 14 minutes. It will be of particular interest to anyone who is employed by an organization, manages a team, operates a business, or works in HR. It may be of lesser value to someone interested in the processes used to mediate civil litigation or family disputes (see my October 21, 2012 post for another video view of the mediation process). That said, the dynamics on display in the TCM video should be of value to anyone curious about mediation.
Providing a snapshot of the mediation process in a short time necessitates the removal of much of the meat of the mediation. This video is no exception. However, the video does an excellent job of
establishing the context for the conflict
setting the stage for the mediation
demonstrating the role that the mediator plays in the process
displaying some of the skills and tools that a mediator can use to encourage parties to engage and communicate productively
displaying the various stages of mediation from initial information gathering, to discussion of issues and interests, to the development of possible options for resolution and, ultimately, to forming agreement.
